About Me

ALICIA CIVITA

I have always lived between two or more worlds and it´s the best thing that it could have ever happened to me.

img_5381Trilingual multimedia journalist with 20+ years of experience in legacy and new media, as well as social media. Founder and CEO of Life a la Latina, a bilingual community that celebrates the Latino experience. I’m a contributor for Cafe Mom´s Mamás LatinasEl Nuevo Herald, El Sentinel de Orlando, Hoy, the Spanish language newspaper or Los Angeles Times, EFE news agency, and Mega TV, among others.

Before this, I relaunched the U.S. Latino edition of Selecciones, the Spanish version of Reader´s Digest, and was the founding editor of EFE´s Hispanic News Service. I have also worked at The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

I love show-business, politics, traveling and home-making, but above anything I´m proudly mamá.

I am proficient in English, Spanish and Portuguese, but in real life I speak code-switching between the three and I mix constantly different aspects of the Hispanic American, Brazilian and American culture.

I´ve always been multilingual and multicultural. Before the age of 5, I knew what it was to be considered special–at best, or weird–at worst, just because I didn´t sound the same as everybody around me.

My mother is Venezuelan, of Native South American, Afrolatino and Spanish ancestors, my father was Galician- Celtic. My husband´s mother is Argentinian, of Basque and Catalonian ancestors, his father was Jewish Italian. I have lived in Caracas, Galicia, Belfast, Río de Janeiro, Miami, Washington D.C and New York City, among other places. My husband has lived in Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Sao Paulo and New York City, also among others. If you want to see what the melting pot looks like: Look at my children.

My parents created a wide and sturdy bridge for me to enjoy my worlds and I have always aimed to do the same between mine and my husband´s world, and our American-born children´s world. Life a la Latina intends to share those learnings and become a vehicle to celebrate and enhance the Latino experience in the U.S and around the world. As well as give a peek to non-Hispanics into what it is like to be lucky enough to be us.

También he trabajado en The Wall Street Journal, Hispanos de About.com En Español y Reuters.

Siempre he sido multilingüe y multicultural.
