CHiPs: Nuestro orgullo Michael Peña on making the Ponch Latino, as he does with all his characters

It was very hard to keep my cool in front of Michael Peña.

Let me tell you why: Michael Vega Peña is the kid of two Mexican immigrants who did everything, and I mean everything to give their kids a better life. To the point, that when they were deported, Michael and his brother had to stay in Chicago with a foster family. It took the couple more than a year to come back to the U.S. He considers himself a storyteller, a talent he says comes from his mom. “We were so poor that our main entertainment was to listen to my mom tell us stories”, he said.

I had the chance of talking with him and Dax Shepard about their movie CHiPs. It’s a film for young men, very far from the TV series, but Shepard, who wrote, acted and directed it never intended more. The chemistry between them is there, both in film and in person. We can say bromance and easy laughs.

However, for Latinos there is more. Erik Estrada is still one of the few of us who has managed to lead a Hollywood made TV show. Poncherello was Italian, though. Not the case for Peña’s Ponch, “It could be Poncho”, he told me and he made it so. While a lot of Latino actors make efforts to play not Hispanic characters, Michael Peña makes them so.

Everytime he can, he makes his character of Latin American origin. In Fury he was Trini ‘Gordo’ García, a representation of  the more than 350,000 Mexican American who fought in World War II. In Ant-Man he was Luis, the smart sidekick, he was austronat Rick Martínez in The Martian and the list goes on.

The list is long and he explained to me why he did it in this interview with him and Dax. Of course, we also talked about CHiPs
