De vuelta a los 80 – Music as a time machine

0

Last night I went on a time machine and landed in my early teens.

Thanks to the nostalgia fever that is sweeping the Western World, with all kinds of reunion, including Menudo, 80’s bands are having their moment in the spotlight again. Somehow somebody realized that Boca Raton is becoming a Generation X and Millenium town and brought to the Amphitheater at Mizner Park some of the coolest bands of the first years of MTV: Flock of Seagulls, Information Society and Wang Chung. The star of the night was teenybopper diva Debbie Gibson. Maybe the names won’t say a lot to you, but if you were what they call an 80’s baby, the music will.

Some of us had their very first dance with a member of the opposite sex while singing “I wanna know what you are thinking, tell me what’s on your mind”. Others dreamed of falling in love like the girl of the “In your eyes” video.

While the music was playing I was transported to my tween years in Caracas, my discovery of 80’s pop and punk in Norther Ireland. The hair, the dances, the neon colors and the boys. It was fun, particularly, because I got to share the moment with the coolest boy of all: My husband. It was magical to be teenagers together.

If you have a chance, go to a place where you can listen to the music that makes you happy. If not, just play it. Talk to your loved ones about your memories, particularly your children. Even if they tell you that the songs are awful, they will enjoy the closeness and seeing your face change as you tell them your stories.

My children love 80s music because we do . They will never be able to listen to any of the songs without thinking about us. In English, Spanish of Portuguese, good or bad, it doesn’t really matter, it’s all about the memories.

See below the video of parts of the concert.

I wanna know what you are thinking, tell me what’s on your mind”.
